About this blog...

This blog is about cooking and eating. There are very few things in our day to day life as human as cooking and eating. Eating is one of the most basic functions of being human. It provides us with a shared experience, and also a way to connect to other cultures and periods in history. Everyone has to do it (hopefully every day), and it should be something that provides pleasure - not stress or worry.

While I frequently buy produce from Farmers' Markets, whole animals from small farms, fresh bread from local bakeries, and support small businesses - I have no larger agenda. My evangelism goes no further than "You gotta try this - it's really good!". If the quality is not worth the price I won't pay it (and I still frequent places like Costco, Meijer, Strack and Van Til, Mariano's, etc.). I do believe the quality from small producers is much better, and is frequently worth the extra cost if you have the money to spend. I also have a vegetable garden, and try not to spend any money for vegetables from June through October. Even more than vegetables I find that meat raised on forage (frequently called grass fed) has a better taste than animals raised on corn feed lots (especially pork). I also think that they are a lot of great cuts of meat that are far too frequently ignored. I'll take Beef Short Ribs or Chuck Eye over Filet Mignon any day. That said, if all you have is packs of frozen chicken breast you can make that work for plenty of things.

I'm hoping to write regular posts that are basic, straightforward, and informative. Cooking is a very rewarding enterprise, and I plan on writing a large number of posts that are geared towards people who are just beginning to cook on a regular basis.

Thanks for visiting the blog!
